Doncaster Research School

We aim to lead the way in the use of evidence-based practice and bring research closer to schools. Through our existing networks we share what we know about putting research into practice, and support schools to make better use of evidence to inform their teaching and learning, so that they really make a difference in the classroom.

We will:

  • Encourage schools to make use of evidence-based programmes and practices through regular communication and events.
  • Provide training and professional development for senior leaders and teachers on how to improve classroom practice based on the best available evidence.
  • Support schools to develop innovative ways of improving teaching and learning and provide them with the expertise to evaluate their impact.

As a Research School for the Doncaster Opportunity Area, much of our work will be developed in response to the social mobility opportunity area strategy plans. These will identify key objectives and actions to improve social mobility, diminish differences for disadvantaged pupils and ‘level up opportunity’.

Maths with Parents

Maths with Parents is an online tool that supports maths at home. We help parents and children to love learning maths together.

Primary maths teaching has improved dramatically, but many children go home and are told “don’t ask me, I’m rubbish at maths”. Maths homework is a miserable chore in too many households, supported by parents who were never taught the new methods that their child is learning.

MwP has revolutionised the way that maths is learnt at home. We work with primary schools to create a tailored package of support for the parents in each class. Every fortnight these parents are shown a short 2-minute video, presented by children, about the method that their child is currently learning. This is a visual, non-threatening way of upskilling the parents, without them feeling patronised.

The video is followed by fun maths games and activities to play together. These games connect the maths that the child is learning at school to real life activities at home, such as cooking, shopping and having dinner. Parents and children rate and leave comments about each activity that they complete. Teachers receive the comments for their class and are provided with tools to monitor the usage.

Live Well Consultancy - Sarah Wray

Live Well Consultancy  -  Sarah Wray

Working with schools and colleges to support mental health, well-being and resilience for staff, children and parents

Founded on my background as a primary school teacher for nearly twenty years, ten of those as a senior leader and head teacher, alongside qualifications and experience in well-being therapies and practices.

Why?

Creating a whole school approach and ethos to mental health care and well-being is inherently valuable to lives. From a school perspective – it impacts on staff stability, presentism, engagement, performance; and children’s attendance, behaviour, exclusions, self-regulation, concentration, and learning. It impacts on school development and performance as a whole.

What?

From your starting point, focusing on the priorities of the school and the new Ofsted Framework, tailored support can include -

  • Whole School– developing well-being policy and strategy; school development planning, curriculum development and monitoring outcomes
  • Staff Well-Being– staff meetings, Inset, courses (including specific groups – Leaders, NQT, ITT) understanding well-being; anxiety and stress management; building resilience; mindset; change; confidence building; mindfulness; personal and team empowerment
  • Staff Training – understanding well-being and resilience for children; developing strategies with children; Mindfulness; Emotional Freedom Technique
  • Children– direct work with groups of children / classes. Understanding my well-being; building resilience and character; mindset; Mindfulness (Paws b Trained Teacher); Emotional Freedom Technique; exam / test stress
  • Parents – workshops

In addition, a range of courses related to the above run throughout the year (email for details)
